Peter Dyck Travel Diaries: Russia (1869, 1870), Migration to America (1876); & Assorted Letters (1876-1884)

This diary of Peter Dyck was sent to me by Professor John Janzen (America) with his kind permission to publish it. I (Willi Frese) had previously received copies of the original diary from Glenn Penner and Conrad Stoesz (Canada), unaware that someone in America was doing the same work. After we had almost finished transcribing and editing the diary, I learned by chance that my relative Frederick Dyck had an old friend in America, Professor John Janzen, who was transcribing and editing the same diary, but unlike me and Willi Risto, in English. Peter Dyck was the great-great-grandfather of Professor John Janzen. The major difference between our German version and the English version by Professor John Janzen lies in the commentary. In his foreword, Professor John Janzen describes the family history, but also provides anthropological insights into social structures and religious ideas and customs. The German version is published in the previous article, so that a direct comparison is possible (if necessary also with a translation program).
